HTML Release Manager Makes Information Updates Transparent to End Users of Riposte

Boston, Mass. - June 18, 1997 - Escher Group Ltd is setting new standards for distributed Post Office automation with their middleware messaging system, Riposte. The latest addition to Riposte's capabilities includes a secure, reliable distribution system for dynamically updating help files on a client's machine, via HTML files over the Internet.

HTML updates are transparent to end users, requiring no manual file management at all. "The content managers - the people who write and release the HTML files - determine how urgently the information is needed. They can issue it for immediate distribution or schedule distribution for off-peak hours to limit network traffic," explained a spokesperson for the Group. "The power to customize and configure the system for performance is built-in, but it's available at the right level to knowledgeable users."

End users have access to the help files even in the event that the network is down. A Riposte client accesses locally-stored HTML files through a network browser built into the Riposte Desktop user interface. The browser accesses only HTML files that have been issued by authorized content managers.

The update process is managed entirely by the client and server. Riposte's Message Store alerts the client that new HTML files should be downloaded. "The Message Store keeps information about the HTML files up-to-date at all times," said Jacob Bara-Skowronek, developer. "The content managers don't need to know how many current clients exist, or where they're located on the network. The Message Store manages all the network-level details."

"Riposte lets Post Offices rapidly add new products and services, and the dynamic HTML updates continually supply the operators with current product information and online help," said Janet Dore, application designer working with Post Office Counters Ltd, the post office of the United Kingdom. "We can virtually eliminate the gap between work completed in the central office and availability in the field."

HTML Release Manager is bundled with Riposte and is available today. The system requires Windows NT Workstation and uses the HTTP protocol for distribution of the HTML files from a Web server.
